The Portuguese Association for Energy Economics (APEEN) was established at the University of Aveiro (UA) during the II Meeting on Energy and Environmental Economics (ME3) held on September 18th, 2015 in the Department of Economics, Management, Industrial Engineering and Tourism (DEGEIT). With the presence and support of Gürkan Kumbaroglu, the elected president of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE), the APEEN was born on the initiative of a group of young researchers of the UA, which counted with the active support of its Spanish counterpart (AEEE) at the initial stage.

The "negotiations" with Portuguese recognized personalities in the field of Energy and Environment Economics culminated in a meeting in Lisbon with the founding partners, who belong to several organs of APEEN. At this meeting, which took place on May 18th, 2015, the present members agreed to join to give birth to the current APEEN by the time of the 12th International Conference on the European Energy Markets (EEM 2015) that occurred in the ISEL - Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa, currently chaired by the vice president of APEEN, Jorge Sousa, from the 19th to the 22nd May 2015. Since then everything has been done to base APEEN in the DEGEIT.
